13 Tips for Traveling With a Mobility Scooter
Traveling with a mobility scooter can be a fantastic way to explore new places.
Recently, I had the pleasure of giving a travel talk at an
Active Senior Center, where I received several inquiries about traveling with a
mobility scooter. Many attendees were curious about whether they could take
their own scooters on a plane or cruise ship. They also wanted to know if it
was possible to ride the scooter directly to the airplane and how to handle
renting a scooter at their travel destination. In response to these common
questions, I’ve compiled 13 valuable tips on traveling with a scooter:
1. Check with Airlines and Cruise Lines:
Before planning your trip, contact the airlines and cruise lines you’ll be using to inquire about their policies and procedures for accommodating mobility scooters. Make sure you let your airline know you will be traveling with a scooter at least 48 hours prior to your flight. Transporting mobility scooters on an airplane is free.
2. TSA Pre-Check:
If you haven’t already, consider getting TSA Pre-Check. This $85 membership for five years allows you to breeze through airport security without removing your shoes, laptop, liquids, belt and light jacket. Simply apply online and schedule a quick 10-minute interview at most local airports to receive your Known Traveler Number (KTN). International travelers can also benefit from Global Entry, which includes TSA Pre-Check and expedited access through Customs and Immigration when returning to the U.S.
3. Taking Your Own Scooter:
In many cases, you can take your own mobility scooter on a plane or a cruise ship. However regulations and restrictions my apply, so it’s essential to check with the transportation provider beforehand.
4. Luggage Tag and Selfies:
Attach a luggage tag with your contact information securely to your scooter before leaving home. As a backup, tape a business card or create a label with your information and stick it to the base of the scooter. Additionally, take a few photos of your scooter with your smartphone to document its condition, just in case you need to make a damage claim with the airline later.
5. Riding the Scooter to the Airplane:
Most airports allow you to ride your scooter directly to the airplane gate. However, it’s advisable to confirm this with the airline and airport personnel to ensure a smooth boarding process. The scooter will be treated like a stroller and put into the cargo bay after you board, the returned when the plane lands. Take advantage of pre-boarding for passengers who need extra assistance. Carry your scooter key with you to avoid misplacement. Show airline personnel where the neutral switch is located for easy manual handling. Plan to be one of the last to disembark the plane to allow time for your scooter’s safe unloading.
6. Renting a Scooter at Your Destination:
7. Reserve Assistance:
When booking your flight or cruise request assistance for boarding and disembarking if needed. Most airline and cruise lines offer special services for passengers with mobility devices. This is help if you want to avoid taking a scooter on a plane and having it delivered to your destination instead.
8. Park and Ride:
You can park off-airport, but leave yourself plenty of extra time. When you check into the lot, ask if there is somewhere special to park since you have a scooter. The shuttle bus driver will help you load a lighter weight scooter that comes apart. Generously tip your driver for the extra service. You may have to wait for a second (or even third) shuttle to have room for you. If the airport has a bus it should have a ramp you can ride your scooter up on. You may consider dropping you and the scooter off while your travel partner parks the car or park on airport property within scooting distance.
9. Batteries and Charging:
If you’re taking your scooter on a plane familiarize yourself with the battery regulations. Ensure your scooter’s batteries are fully charged before your journey and bring the necessary charging equipment. On a cruise ship you can leave the scooter outside your door and your steward will take it to a secure room and charge it overnight, then bring back to you when you are ready.
10. Scooter Dimensions:
Know the dimensions and weight of your scooter, as this information may be required during the reservation and check in process.
11. Inspect Your Scooter:
Before and after your trip, inspect your scooter for any damage. If you notice any issues, report them to the relevant personnel immediately.
12. Plan Ahead:
Careful planning is the key to a successful trip with your mobility scooter. Be proactive in communicating with transportation providers and arranging necessary accommodations.
13. Contact your Travel Advisor:
Your experienced travel advisor will be aware of all these tips and can take care of most of them for you saving you the time a hassle.
By following these tips, you can have a worry-free and enjoyable travel experience with your mobility scooter, whether you’re exploring new destinations by plane or cruise ship.
